Prepare Your Sample

Proper sample preparation ensures the best analytical results and fastest turnaround time.

General Sample Requirements:

Sample Amount
  • NMR: 1-5 mg for most organic compounds with MW <1000 for H-1. See other nuclei for specific nuclei quantities
  • Mass Spec: 1-2 mg minimum
  • Elemental Analysis: 4-6 mg
  • Optical Rotation: Dependent on concentration required. Contact us if you have questions
  • IR Spectroscopy: 5-10mg (we will need enough to cover ATR crystal)

More material may be needed for low-solubility or complex samples.

Sample Form
  • Solid, liquid, or oil accepted
  • Should be free of magnetic particles
  • Minimal water content preferred for NMR
  • Store in clean, sealed container

Labeling Requirements:

  • Label each sample clearly with a unique identifier
  • Match labels to your submission form
  • Include your name or institution
  • Note any special handling requirements
  • Indicate if samples are hazardous or air/moisture sensitive

Package and Ship Your Sample

Packaging Guidelines:

  • Use sturdy, protective packaging to prevent breakage
  • Wrap sample containers in bubble wrap or similar cushioning
  • Include your completed submission form inside the package
  • For hazardous materials, follow proper shipping regulations
  • Consider temperature-sensitive samples - contact us for guidance

Receive Your Results

Once we receive your sample, we'll process it according to your specifications and deliver results within the agreed timeframe.

Turnaround Times:

  • Routine H-1 and P-31 NMR: 24 hours
  • Other nuclei (C-13, F-19, etc.): 2-5 business days
  • 2D NMR: 3-7 business days depending on complexity
  • Mass Spectrometry: 1-2 business days
  • Elemental Analysis: 3-5 business days
  • Optical Rotation: 1-3 business days
  • FTIR: 1-3 business days

Rush service may be available upon request - please contact us to discuss your timeline.

Special Considerations

Air/Moisture Sensitive Samples

If your samples are sensitive to air or moisture:

  • Package under inert atmosphere (argon or nitrogen)
  • Use sealed vials or ampoules
  • Clearly mark "Air Sensitive" or "Moisture Sensitive"
  • Contact us before shipping for special handling instructions
  • We do not have a glove box to handle samples in inert gas environment. They will be prepped right before running.

Hazardous Materials

For toxic, flammable, or otherwise hazardous samples:

  • Provide MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) with shipment
  • Follow DOT regulations for hazardous shipping
  • Clearly label all hazards on package and submission form
  • Contact us in advance to ensure proper handling

Limited Sample Quantity

If you have very limited sample material:

  • Contact us before submission to discuss options
  • We can often work with smaller quantities
  • We'll help prioritize which analyses are most important
  • Micro-scale NMR techniques may be available

Solvent Preferences

For NMR analysis, common solvents include:

  • CDCl3 (Chloroform-d) - most common
  • DMSO-d6 (Dimethyl sulfoxide-d6)
  • D2O (Deuterium oxide)
  • Other solvents available upon request and may incur solvent fee
  • Ampoules with limited water are available for a fee

If you have a solvent preference, please note it on your submission form.
